Black Bear Watching on Vancouver Island, Built Around the Season

On Vancouver Island’s rainforest shoreline, spring hunger and autumn salmon runs shape two very different ways of watching the same bear, one unhurried and tide timed, the other fast and intensely active.

Why we love building this experience into our itineraries:

Black bear watching on Vancouver Island is a different proposition to the grizzly viewing offered from the British Columbia mainland further north. There are no grizzlies on the island, only an estimated seven to twelve thousand black bears sharing an island a little larger than Belgium, one of the densest bear populations found anywhere in North America. It is a bear that suits considered watching better than most: solitary, tide timed, and reliably predictable once you understand what it is doing at that point in the year.

The pattern that matters most is seasonal, and it comes down to hunger. Bears come out of hibernation in April thin and undernourished, having lost as much as a third of their body weight over the winter, and they go straight to the shoreline. At low tide, the rainforest edge gives way to exposed rock and mudflat thick with crabs, shellfish and the season’s first sedge grass, and a hungry bear will work that strip of coast methodically, turning stones and grazing at a pace that makes for genuinely good watching. Clayoquot Sound, reached by boat from Tofino through its network of sheltered inlets, is where this spring pattern is most reliably seen. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, a remote wilderness property on the Bedwell River reached by floatplane or boat, sits inside that same stretch of coast and puts guests within reach of the shoreline for several days rather than a single outing. Cubs typically appear on these shorelines from late May as sows bring them out for the first time.

By late summer the priority reverses. Hyperphagia, the biological drive to eat enormous quantities ahead of denning, pulls bears away from the coast and inland to the rivers where salmon are running. On Vancouver Island that means creeks and hatchery reaches such as the Quinsam River at Campbell River and the Stamp River near Port Alberni, running from August through November as different species peak in different months, pink and chum earliest, coho and chinook later in the season. A bear in hyperphagia can feed for up to twenty hours a day, which makes autumn the season for watching bears actually feed rather than simply forage, a markedly different rhythm from the unhurried tide walking of spring.

Both seasons reward the same kind of traveller: someone content to sit in a boat or on a viewing platform and wait, rather than someone working through a checklist. Spring suits a traveller who wants time on the water and does not mind that early low tides can mean an early start. Autumn suits a traveller drawn to the drama of a salmon run, and often means sharing the outing with a wildlife photographer or two, since the creek mouths in peak salmon season are when serious photographers travel to the island specifically. Either way, this sits well as a two to three night addition to a Vancouver Island itinerary rather than a destination in its own right, paired naturally with Tofino’s coastline and old-growth forest or Campbell River’s own salmon heritage.

5 reasons this belongs on your Bucket List:

  • Two distinct feeding seasons – spring brings bears onto the shoreline at low tide, autumn pulls them inland to the salmon runs, and both are worth seeing for different reasons.
  • North America's densest bear population – an estimated seven to twelve thousand black bears live on an island a little larger than Belgium, with no grizzlies to compete for space or salmon.
  • Boat-based viewing through Clayoquot Sound – tours run on the tide rather than a schedule, keeping a respectful, engine-off distance as bears forage along the shoreline near Tofino.
  • A draw for wildlife photographers – the salmon-run creek mouths in autumn concentrate bears, light and movement in a way that keeps photographers returning year after year.
  • A natural itinerary addition – two to three nights based around Tofino or Campbell River sits comfortably alongside Vancouver Island's coastline, rainforest and small coastal towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

The standard routing is a flight from Auckland to Vancouver, followed by a short flight or the ferry across to Vancouver Island itself. Tofino, the base for Clayoquot Sound's spring bear watching, has direct flights from Vancouver in season, while Campbell River and the autumn salmon rivers are reached by road or a short flight to Comox. Most itineraries treat this as one stop within a wider British Columbia journey rather than a dedicated flight in its own right.
New Zealand passport holders flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) rather than a visa. It is applied for online, linked to the passport, and is normally processed within minutes, though it is worth allowing a few days in case of delay. Canadian border officials will also expect proof of onward travel and sufficient funds for the stay, standard practice at entry.
There are two distinct windows. Spring, roughly April to June, is when bears come out of hibernation hungry and forage predictably along the shoreline at low tide, particularly through Clayoquot Sound. Autumn, roughly August through November, is when the salmon runs pull bears inland to rivers such as the Quinsam and the Stamp, feeding hard ahead of hibernation. Both are reliable, and the choice comes down to whether tide walking or a salmon run is the more interesting picture.
Vancouver Island's commercial bear-watching operators run these tours daily through the season with an established safety record, keeping boats or viewing platforms at a distance the bears are accustomed to and never approaching feeding animals on foot. The bears here are black bears, generally less confrontational than grizzlies and typically indifferent to a boat kept at a respectful distance. Guides read bear behaviour continuously and will reposition or end a viewing if an animal shows any sign of stress.
Yes. Tofino and Clayoquot Sound combine naturally with whale watching, since grey whales and humpbacks move through the same waters across spring and summer, and with the region's old-growth rainforest and beaches. Campbell River's autumn salmon season pairs well with the town's own salmon fishing heritage and easy access to the Discovery Islands. Both approaches sit comfortably within a longer Vancouver Island or wider British Columbia itinerary rather than needing to stand alone.

I approached Ron Montgomery of Spirit of Travel in October last (2025) as we'd booked flights to and from Vietnam with no plan of the itinerary for our three week journey, and only six weeks or so away from our ETA in Saigon. So I'd really put the pressure on him to provide an itinerary, and he came up trumps. We were so happy with our journey, the accommodation was top quality as were the tours and guides. We were transported off our flights to our accommodation and anywhere necessary in between. Plus we had online (via WhatsApp) travel guides supporting us throughout our journey. They advised us the details for our taxi drivers and tour guides wherever necessary and if anything didn't work out they were there to fix it. I've just revisited my travel blog and can honestly say, it was a truly memorable trip, and so well organised, with everything we'd asked for and more. We got the flavour of Vietnam, the culture and the people just as we'd hoped. So thankyou Ron.... we highly recommend him and his top shelf skills.
