Why we love building this experience into our itineraries:

The Golden Triangle and the wider state of Rajasthan hold the India most people already carry in their minds: desert forts and camel trains, markets fragrant with spice, richly coloured textiles and palaces built for maharajas. A Golden Triangle India private tour brings much of that picture together in one manageable loop, linking Delhi, Agra and Jaipur over seven to ten nights. For first-time visitors it is a natural starting point, offering a grounding in the country’s history, scale and rhythm before going further afield, whether into Rajasthan’s desert cities, south to Kerala or east to Varanasi.

We recommend travelling the whole circuit by private car with a driver. The loop covers roughly 720 kilometres. Delhi to Agra takes about three and a half hours on the Yamuna Expressway, and the longer legs to and from Jaipur run to four or five hours. India’s trains are an iconic experience in their own right, but timetables are unreliable, and on a journey with this much to see, dependable days matter. A car also makes it easy to stop along the way, at the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri, at the deep, geometric Chand Baori stepwell in Abhaneri, or at a roadside chai stall when the moment suits. Seven to ten nights allows two or more nights in each city, enough time to absorb each place before moving on.

Agra rewards an early start. The Taj Mahal is among the most photographed buildings in the world, and what surprised us most on first seeing it was how much smaller it felt in person, and how delicate, almost like crystal, the white marble appears as the light shifts across it. The gates open 30 minutes before sunrise, and that first hour, before the heat and the crowds build, is when this quality is easiest to see. The monument closes every Friday, so we plan the sequence of the journey around it from the outset.

Accommodation is one of the strongest reasons to go. A visit to India is the opportunity to stay in historic, elegant and at times opulent palaces and heritage properties, a world apart from the mainstream hotels most travellers are used to elsewhere. Across Rajasthan, residences of former royal families, merchant havelis and hilltop forts now welcome guests, many with their original courtyards, frescoed walls and gardens intact, and evenings in these settings become as much a part of the journey as the days. The Golden Triangle suits travellers comfortable with crowds, noise and intensity in the cities, who also value the calm these properties offer at the end of each day.

Sustainable travel planning

5 reasons this belongs on your Bucket List:

  • The classic picture of India - forts, palaces, spice markets and textiles in every colour bring together the India many travellers have carried in their minds for years.
  • Palace and heritage stays - former royal residences, havelis and forts now welcome guests, offering history and character that mainstream hotels elsewhere rarely match.
  • The Taj Mahal at first light - entry opens 30 minutes before sunrise, when the marble appears at its most delicate and the crowds have yet to arrive.
  • A road journey with room to stop - a private car and driver make Fatehpur Sikri, the Abhaneri stepwell and unplanned roadside moments easy to include.
  • A natural first step into India - seven to ten nights gives a grounded introduction, with Ranthambore, Udaipur and the rest of Rajasthan within reach for a longer journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Delhi is the starting point for most Golden Triangle journeys, and from New Zealand it is usually reached with one connection, commonly through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or a Gulf hub such as Dubai. The journey from Auckland generally takes the better part of a day, depending on the routing and connection time. Allowing a night in Delhi to rest before sightseeing begins makes the first days of the journey noticeably more comfortable.
Yes. New Zealand passport holders need a visa for India, and most travellers apply online for the e-Tourist Visa through the Government of India's official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in. Applications should be made at least four days before arrival, and the passport must be valid for at least six months from the arrival date with at least two blank pages. Applying through the official site avoids third-party agencies that charge additional fees for the same process.
Seven to ten nights suits most travellers, allowing two or more nights in each of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and time to stop between them. A private car with a driver is the most dependable way to travel the roughly 720 kilometre circuit, with road legs of about three and a half to five hours. India's trains are an iconic experience, but delays are common, and a car allows stops at places such as Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri stepwell that a train passes by. Shorter three to five night versions are widely sold, though they leave little time beyond the main monuments.
October to March is the most comfortable time to travel, with dry weather, warm days and cool mornings across Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. December and January can bring cold nights and morning fog around Delhi and Agra, which occasionally softens early views of the Taj Mahal. From April to June temperatures regularly rise above 40°C, and July to September brings the monsoon, so most travellers plan around these months, although the journey remains possible with careful pacing.
Yes, and it is one of the most natural extensions in India. A Golden Triangle and Rajasthan itinerary commonly adds Ranthambore National Park, about three and a half hours by road from Jaipur, for the chance to see wild Bengal tigers, or continues to the lake city of Udaipur, the blue city of Jodhpur and the desert city of Jaisalmer. Ranthambore typically adds two to three nights, while Udaipur and Jodhpur together add around five to six, travelled by the same private car or with a short domestic flight where distances are long.

I approached Ron Montgomery of Spirit of Travel in October last (2025) as we'd booked flights to and from Vietnam with no plan of the itinerary for our three week journey, and only six weeks or so away from our ETA in Saigon. So I'd really put the pressure on him to provide an itinerary, and he came up trumps. We were so happy with our journey, the accommodation was top quality as were the tours and guides. We were transported off our flights to our accommodation and anywhere necessary in between. Plus we had online (via WhatsApp) travel guides supporting us throughout our journey. They advised us the details for our taxi drivers and tour guides wherever necessary and if anything didn't work out they were there to fix it. I've just revisited my travel blog and can honestly say, it was a truly memorable trip, and so well organised, with everything we'd asked for and more. We got the flavour of Vietnam, the culture and the people just as we'd hoped. So thankyou Ron.... we highly recommend him and his top shelf skills.
