Why we love building this experience into our itineraries:

Eastern Sicily is shaped by volcanoes, and a Sicily volcanic landscape journey follows that thread from Mount Etna to the Aeolian Islands offshore. Etna rises to around 3,300 metres and is the highest active volcano in Europe, while Stromboli, to the north, has erupted in small, regular explosions for roughly two thousand years. For travellers who already know mainland Italy, this is a different kind of Italy, organised around terrain, sea and weather, with the Greek and Baroque towns of the coast as a counterpoint.

Etna is visited in layers. The cable car from Rifugio Sapienza climbs from about 1,900 to 2,500 metres, a 4×4 continues to around 2,900 metres, and the summit craters above are open only with an authorised guide and only when the volcano allows. We plan each Etna day with a second option, usually the Silvestri craters, which can be walked without a guide, or a long lunch at a winery on the lower slopes, where Nerello Mascalese grows on volcanic soil. Taormina, with its Greek theatre facing the mountain, is the most comfortable base on the coast.

The Aeolian Islands are reached from Milazzo, about two hours by road from the Etna area. On a self-drive journey the car stays at Milazzo, as the Liberty Lines hydrofoils carry foot passengers and reach Lipari in about an hour. Lipari is the practical base, with Vulcano a short crossing away and a crater walk that runs at set hours when the alert level is green. Stromboli is visited at dusk: walkers may climb to 290 metres unguided, guides lead groups to a viewpoint at 400 metres, and nothing higher is open, so many travellers watch from a boat below the Sciara del Fuoco instead.

May, June and September suit this journey. Walking days are comfortable, the sea is warm enough for swimming by September, and July and August bring heat and Italian holiday crowds to Lipari. Ten to twelve nights allows four around Etna and Taormina, four on the Aeolians, and time in Catania or Syracuse at either end. A closure on the mountain or a cancelled hydrofoil in rough weather can move a day. Palermo, Agrigento and the west are better kept for a second visit.

Sustainable travel planning

5 reasons this belongs on your Bucket List:

  • Europe's highest active volcano - Etna reaches around 3,300 metres, with a cable car and 4x4 route to about 2,900 metres and guided access to the summit craters when conditions allow.
  • Stromboli at dusk - Small eruptions have been recorded here for roughly two thousand years, watched from a guided viewpoint at 400 metres or from a boat below the Sciara del Fuoco.
  • Wine grown on volcanic soil - Nerello Mascalese on Etna's slopes and Malvasia on Salina, both within easy reach of the coast and the harbours.
  • Islands reached by hydrofoil - Lipari is about an hour from Milazzo, with Vulcano and Salina a short crossing further, so the sea becomes part of each day.
  • Comfortable shoulder-season timing - May, June and September avoid the heat and crowds of July and August on both the coast and the islands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Catania is the usual arrival airport for an eastern Sicily journey, with a hire car collected there for the mainland sections, and from New Zealand it is generally reached with two connections, commonly through Dubai, or through Singapore, Doha or Hong Kong and then Rome or another European hub. Total travel time is more than a full day, so a night in Catania or Taormina before the first excursion makes the opening days more comfortable. From Catania, Taormina is about an hour by road and Milazzo, the port for the Aeolian Islands, about two hours.
No. New Zealand passport holders can enter Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules, with a passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date. The EU's ETIAS online travel authorisation has not yet started operating and its launch date has been revised more than once, so the official EU travel website should be checked before booking. The Entry/Exit System, which records a photo and fingerprints at first entry, has been rolling out across Schengen borders since October 2025.
May, June and September are the best months, with comfortable walking temperatures, a warm sea by September and fuller ferry and hydrofoil timetables than in winter. July and August are hotter and busier, particularly on Lipari. Volcanic activity is unrelated to the season, so summit access on Etna and the paths on Stromboli and Vulcano can close in any month.
On Etna, the cable car and 4x4 reach about 2,900 metres, and the summit craters at around 3,300 metres are open only with an authorised guide and only when the volcano allows. On Stromboli, visitors may walk to 290 metres without a guide and to a 400-metre viewpoint with one, and nothing higher is open. On Vulcano, the crater walk operates at set hours when the alert level is green. These rules are set by local authorities and change with volcanic activity, so they are confirmed shortly before each visit.
Ten to twelve nights suits most travellers: four around Etna and Taormina, four on the Aeolian Islands, and two to four more in Catania or Syracuse and Ortigia at either end. Syracuse is about an hour south of Catania by road and adds Greek and Baroque history to the journey. Palermo, Agrigento and western Sicily sit a long drive away and need several more nights, which is why we keep them for a separate journey.

I approached Ron Montgomery of Spirit of Travel in October last (2025) as we'd booked flights to and from Vietnam with no plan of the itinerary for our three week journey, and only six weeks or so away from our ETA in Saigon. So I'd really put the pressure on him to provide an itinerary, and he came up trumps. We were so happy with our journey, the accommodation was top quality as were the tours and guides. We were transported off our flights to our accommodation and anywhere necessary in between. Plus we had online (via WhatsApp) travel guides supporting us throughout our journey. They advised us the details for our taxi drivers and tour guides wherever necessary and if anything didn't work out they were there to fix it. I've just revisited my travel blog and can honestly say, it was a truly memorable trip, and so well organised, with everything we'd asked for and more. We got the flavour of Vietnam, the culture and the people just as we'd hoped. So thankyou Ron.... we highly recommend him and his top shelf skills.
