Why we love building this experience into our itineraries:

Kerala is the gentler side of India. A journey through Kerala’s backwaters and beaches begins in cool hill country and ends on the Arabian Sea coast, and the pace slows at every stage. After the intensity of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur the change is clear within a day: greener landscapes, quieter roads and a rhythm set by water and weather. For many travellers it forms the natural second half of a first journey to India, and it stands equally well on its own.

Most journeys begin in Fort Kochi, where Portuguese, Dutch and British history sits alongside the Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront and the old spice warehouses of Mattancherry. From there the road climbs for about four hours to Munnar, where tea estates cover the slopes of the Western Ghats and the air is noticeably cooler. A few hours further on, Thekkady sits on the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve, known for its spice gardens and for boat trips on Periyar Lake, where elephants come down to the water’s edge, most often in March and April. We plan the journey by private car with a driver, with road legs of three to four hours between stops.

The backwaters are a network of lakes, rivers and canals running inland from the coast, centred on Vembanad Lake. We include one night aboard a kettuvallam, a traditional rice barge converted into a private houseboat with its own crew and cook. Guests board around midday and cruise through the afternoon past paddy fields, villages and small churches. Houseboats are not permitted to cruise after dark, so the boat moors by about 5.30pm, and the evening passes quietly on the water before a short morning cruise back to the jetty. One night covers the experience fully. Alleppey offers the classic canal scenery and the widest choice of boats, while Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of the lake, is quieter, and we choose between them according to the season and the traveller.

The journey ends on the coast. Marari, north of Alleppey, is a quiet stretch of sand fringed with coconut palms and fishing villages, while Varkala, further south, is the only beach in southern Kerala backed by sea cliffs. Either makes a natural place to slow down for two or three nights. Kerala is also the home of Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of medicine, and many properties in the hills and on the coast offer treatments, from a single massage to a programme over several days. Kerala suits travellers who enjoy nature, gentle pacing and time to rest, and who are content to trade monuments for landscapes.

Sustainable travel planning

5 reasons this belongs on your Bucket List:

  • A slower, greener India - Backwaters, tea hills and a palm-lined coast offer a calm counterpoint to the busier cities of the north.
  • A night on the backwaters - A private houseboat cruises the canals around Vembanad Lake through the afternoon, then moors in stillness for the evening.
  • Tea country in the Western Ghats - Munnar's estates bring cooler air, long views and walks among the tea bushes.
  • Spice, trade and history in Fort Kochi - Chinese fishing nets, colonial streets and Mattancherry's spice warehouses sit within one walkable quarter.
  • Time to rest by the Arabian Sea - Marari or Varkala, with Ayurvedic treatments close at hand, bring the journey to an unhurried close.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kochi is the usual arrival point for a Kerala journey, and from New Zealand it is generally reached with one connection, commonly through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or a Gulf hub such as Dubai or Doha. Travellers combining Kerala with the Golden Triangle take a domestic flight from Delhi to Kochi of about three hours. Most Kerala journeys loop back to Kochi at the end, so arrival and departure share the same airport and international connections.
Seven to ten nights suits most travellers. A typical route spends one or two nights in Fort Kochi, two in Munnar, one or two in Thekkady, one aboard a houseboat and two or three on the coast. Travelling by private car with a driver keeps each road leg to around three to four hours and allows stops at tea estates, spice gardens and viewpoints along the way.
An overnight houseboat stay in Kerala lasts roughly 18 to 20 hours. Guests board around midday, cruise the backwaters through the afternoon and moor by about 5.30pm, as houseboats are not permitted to cruise after dark. A private crew prepares Keralan meals on board, and most boats have air-conditioned bedrooms with their own bathrooms. The boat returns to the jetty at around 9am the following morning.
October to March is the most comfortable time to visit Kerala, with drier weather and temperatures of around 22 to 32°C on the coast. December and January are the busiest months. The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain from June to August, which can limit houseboat routes, while September is green and well suited to the hills. Munnar stays cooler year-round, with January temperatures of around 12 to 23°C.
Yes. A Golden Triangle and Kerala itinerary is one of the most natural combinations in India, linked by a domestic flight of about three hours from Delhi to Kochi. Most travellers allow 14 to 18 nights in total and travel the north first, so the busier cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are followed by the slower pace of the hills, backwaters and coast. Both halves are travelled by private car with a driver.

I approached Ron Montgomery of Spirit of Travel in October last (2025) as we'd booked flights to and from Vietnam with no plan of the itinerary for our three week journey, and only six weeks or so away from our ETA in Saigon. So I'd really put the pressure on him to provide an itinerary, and he came up trumps. We were so happy with our journey, the accommodation was top quality as were the tours and guides. We were transported off our flights to our accommodation and anywhere necessary in between. Plus we had online (via WhatsApp) travel guides supporting us throughout our journey. They advised us the details for our taxi drivers and tour guides wherever necessary and if anything didn't work out they were there to fix it. I've just revisited my travel blog and can honestly say, it was a truly memorable trip, and so well organised, with everything we'd asked for and more. We got the flavour of Vietnam, the culture and the people just as we'd hoped. So thankyou Ron.... we highly recommend him and his top shelf skills.
