Polar Bear Viewing in Churchill, Timed to the Ice

On the shores of Hudson Bay each autumn, polar bears gather to wait for ice, and Churchill becomes one of the only places on earth where that wait can be watched from metres away.

Why we love building this experience into our itineraries:

Polar bear viewing in Churchill exists because of a single point of geography: this stretch of the Hudson Bay coast is one of the first places the sea ice forms each autumn, and the Western Hudson Bay polar bears know it. As the bay’s edge starts to freeze, bears that have spent the summer fasting on shore move toward the coastline to wait, conserving energy until the ice is solid enough to carry them out after seals. It is why one small town has become the place most reliably associated with wild polar bears anywhere on earth. The numbers are worth stating plainly: the most recent survey counted around 618 bears in this population, down from 842 five years earlier, a reminder that this is a considered visit worth planning well rather than a casual add-on.

Timing within the season matters as much as the season itself. Early October still has a snow-free tundra and fewer bears working the coast, by mid to late October the numbers build to their peak, with the largest concentration of bears gathered and waiting, and early November tends to be the best window for spotting mothers with new cubs, in colder conditions and shorter, more dramatic light. By late November the bay begins to freeze in earnest and bears disperse out onto the ice, effectively ending the season until the following year. A late October or early November booking, rather than an early one, is the difference between a handful of distant bears and a coastline working with them.

The tundra buggy is what makes close, sustained viewing possible without disturbing the bears or putting anyone at risk. These are enormous, high-wheeled vehicles built specifically for the terrain, moving slowly along established routes through the Churchill Wildlife Management Area with an open viewing deck at the rear. Tundra Buggy Lodge takes this further: a mobile lodge that relocates on the tundra itself, putting guests within reach of the bears around the clock rather than only during a day’s drive out from town, though accommodation is in shared bunk cabins rather than private rooms, a trade worth knowing about upfront. It is a genuinely different rhythm to a day trip, several days spent inside the bears’ own territory rather than visiting it.

This is expedition-style travel rather than a straightforward add-on. Churchill has no road access. Getting there means a two-hour flight from Winnipeg or, for travellers who want the journey itself, a two-day train through the boreal forest, and daytime temperatures on the tundra typically sit between minus twelve and minus four degrees before wind chill. None of that makes the experience difficult so much as deliberate: warm layers, patience, and a real interest in the landscape rather than a quick tick of a box. The aurora is a real possibility too. Churchill sits under the auroral oval with a chance of sightings on many nights of the year, and while February and March are the true peak for clear, dark skies, an evening display during bear season is a genuine bonus rather than something to count on.

Sustainable travel planning

5 reasons this belongs on your Bucket List:

  • A single, predictable gathering point – geography concentrates the Western Hudson Bay bears along one stretch of coast each autumn, rather than scattering sightings across a vast range.
  • A precise timing window – late October to early November is when the largest numbers gather, well ahead of when the bay freezes and bears disperse onto the ice.
  • Tundra buggy access – purpose-built vehicles allow sustained, close viewing from a safe, respectful distance, with the option to base overnight right on the tundra.
  • A genuine aurora chance – Churchill sits under the auroral oval, and a bear-season evening display is a real, if secondary, possibility.
  • Deliberately expedition-style – no road access, sub-zero days and a slower pace shape this into something distinct from a casual stop on a wider itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

The routing runs from Auckland to Winnipeg, typically via Vancouver or another Canadian gateway, followed by a roughly two-hour flight north to Churchill itself, since there is no road access. Fall is Churchill's busiest season, so the Winnipeg-Churchill flight should be booked well ahead rather than left until closer to travel. Most itineraries treat Churchill as a focused three or four night addition within a wider Canada journey rather than a standalone trip.
New Zealand passport holders flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) rather than a visa. It is applied for online, linked to the passport, and normally processed within minutes, though it is worth allowing a few days in case of delay. Canadian border officials will also expect proof of onward travel and sufficient funds for the stay, standard practice at entry.
The core window runs from mid to late October through early November. Early October still has a snow-free landscape and fewer bears on the coast, the middle to end of October brings the largest numbers, and early November tends to be best for spotting mothers with cubs. By late November the bay is freezing in earnest and bears move out onto the ice, after which reliable viewing from Churchill ends for the season.
The standard method is the tundra buggy, a purpose-built, high-wheeled vehicle that moves slowly along established routes through the Churchill Wildlife Management Area with an open viewing platform at the rear. Viewing happens from inside or on top of the vehicle, at a distance the bears are accustomed to, with experienced guides reading behaviour throughout. Walking outside town without a guide is discouraged during bear season, which is part of why the tundra buggy, rather than a walking safari, is the standard way to see bears here.
Yes, most obviously the aurora. Churchill sits under the auroral oval with a chance of sightings on a good portion of nights through the year, though February and March, well outside bear season, are the genuine peak for clear, dark skies. During bear season itself, an aurora display is a real possibility rather than a guarantee, and lodges and tour operators on the tundra typically build in a late viewing if conditions allow. Beyond that, Churchill is usually paired with time in Winnipeg rather than visited as a completely standalone trip, given the flight routing through there.

I approached Ron Montgomery of Spirit of Travel in October last (2025) as we'd booked flights to and from Vietnam with no plan of the itinerary for our three week journey, and only six weeks or so away from our ETA in Saigon. So I'd really put the pressure on him to provide an itinerary, and he came up trumps. We were so happy with our journey, the accommodation was top quality as were the tours and guides. We were transported off our flights to our accommodation and anywhere necessary in between. Plus we had online (via WhatsApp) travel guides supporting us throughout our journey. They advised us the details for our taxi drivers and tour guides wherever necessary and if anything didn't work out they were there to fix it. I've just revisited my travel blog and can honestly say, it was a truly memorable trip, and so well organised, with everything we'd asked for and more. We got the flavour of Vietnam, the culture and the people just as we'd hoped. So thankyou Ron.... we highly recommend him and his top shelf skills.
