Spotlight on Japan’s Cuisine

Recently Japan has reopened its borders for leisure travel and so we feel it is time to highlight the amazing Japanese cuisine.

Japan is a destination that offers a wide variety of food experiences for visitors. From traditional sushi and ramen to more modern takes on Japanese cuisine, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the most popular food experiences in Japan is sushi. Sushi is a type of Japanese dish that consists of vinegared rice combined with raw fish, vegetables, or egg. In Japan there are two common style places to enjoy sushi. You can partake at sushi restaurants, or at sushi bars where the chef prepares the sushi in front of you. Some of the most popular sushi restaurants in Japan include Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo and Sushi Saito in Tokyo.

Another popular food synonymous with Japanese cuisine is ramen. Ramen is a Japanese dish that consists of Chinese-style wheat noodles served in a meat or fish-based broth. It is often flavoured with soy sauce or miso, and topped with ingredients such as sliced pork, dried seaweed, and green onions. Find your local ramen shops and dig in. Some of the most popular ramen shops in Japan include Ippudo in Tokyo and Ichiran in Osaka.

Of course, we cannot forget tempura. Tempura is a Japanese dish that consists of seafood, meat, or vegetables that have been coated in a light batter and deep-fried. Tempura can be enjoyed at restaurants specializing in preparing it. Perhaps treat yourself to one of the popular tempura restaurants in Japan like Ten-ichi in Tokyo and Kondo in Kyoto.

Japanese cuisine also offers a wide variety of street food. Popular street food in Japan includes Takoyaki (octopus balls), Yakisoba (stir-fried noodles), and Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) which can be found at street vendors and festivals across the country.

Finally, Japan is also well known for its tea ceremony, where visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese tea and sweets in a peaceful setting. The tea ceremony is a traditional ritual that has been practiced for centuries and can be enjoyed at tea houses, temples, and traditional Japanese gardens.

Japan offers a wide variety of food experiences for visitors to enjoy, from traditional sushi and ramen to more modern takes on Japanese cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a fine-dining experience or a casual street food adventure, Japan has something for everyone.
